Title: A Higher Calling – Author: David Ansett – Brandmentalist

Description: Thanks to cluttered markets like we’ve never seen before – differentiation has become the ‘must have’ of business success. Through product and service innovation through to the way they go to market, organizations of every type in every corner of this globe understand that they must stand for something unique and worthwhile in their customers hearts and minds or go the way of the dinosaur and VHS video. Enter the white knight brand designer.
The logo must also evolve to a higher purpose. No longer can it play the role of a humble identifyer; designed with an aesthetic mindset, established through repetition and association alone. If graphic design is to have a strong hand in the revolution, the passive, beautiful logos of yesterday must evolve into the aesthetically charged, brand marks of tomorrow. Brand marks are inspired by commercial purpose – they have brand coded into their DNA so they act not only as an identifyer, but as a deliverer of brand strategy, a communicator of brand meaning, and a keeper of unique visual properties.

  1. Personally I always love articles about classical logo designers like tom geismar…

maybe an article about what is more important: A solid concept or just the look of a logo.

  2. I’m always more interested in the logo development process, sketches etc. than the actual finished logo.

  3. I guess first of all it would be good to understand whether it’s another inspirational book then I’m for sketch-through-logo stuff, of if it’s some kind of how to design thing, then woudl be good to read stuff on typography in logo design, negative space practice, success stories of mature and famous designers and freelance-beginners

A compareision between the designers suggested logo and the clienets picked and/or changed version :D

  5. Actually, I agree with Dominic. A comparison of designs of what the clients want (what they chose) and what the clients need (what we suggest).

I also want to see a list of prominent designers and up-and-coming ones. Something that will help expose them more. Freelance design is quite hard, especially when looking for clients. Hmmmm come to think of it, maybe a directory, or a paid-for ads at the back.

    Thanks!

  6. Thank you all for your ideas and suggestions. What do you think about the idea that designers who win the monthly prize give opportunity to on a few pages say something about themselves and show their work?

Also we see that points on the logo design process, so we devote a few pages to sketching and techniques … logo design process from start to finish. We think that this idea is very good!!!

    Waiting for more suggesitions…

Good idea with the designers pages.

Maybe a little about you. I actually have no idea who you are and where you come from :D Who are the designers behind the book?

  8. Thanks Dominic. In a few days we will write post about more who we really are.

  9. It’s a very vague theme, but I think will be interesting if you write an article about the power of a good logo and how it is important to sell a company or a product. By experience, I understood if anyone spend some money and time in build a good corporate identity they going sell much more better their product, even if the product is bad! It’s fantastic the logo power !

  10. I enjoy the before and after exploration of Underconsideration.com
Also we write a fair bit about brand identity from a design and strategic view-point on our blog: http://www.trulydeeply.com.au/madly

  11. Hello Dave. Your blog is amazing. If you are interested in contributing to Logo Nest site or book please contact us!

  12. Not sure if its going against the direction of the current content, but I think it would be cool to make every logo in the book less than 12-18 months old.

If the book is annual then it could double as a current unbiased ‘hot brand designers’ directory.

  13. I like the idea of featuring your readers. You could have the winners submit their sketches/process. Maybe not all of them, but pick a handful. I’ve read all about famous designers, but I’d like to see fresh new designers as well. That seems to be your audience in the blogsphere. Direct the book towards them.

  14. Out of curiosity, how many pages do you plan your book to be? Since we can suggest a whole bunch of things that won’t fit your book :)

  15. >Nathan Sarlow – good idea but it would be very difficult to determine when a logo designed.

    >Amy Locurto – every designer who won Logo of the Month award given two pages in the Logo Nest 01 book, to show him and his work. We want to give opportunity to new designers.

    >LukeSF – plan to have about 200 pages. I think we can put everything that have suggested here :)

Now we know for certain that we need 24 pages for 12 designers who win the logo of the month award.

  16. Confirmed first book contributor, David Ansett – Brandmentalist, Thanks David

  17. Just thought that it could be cool to have the book cover made of the winning logos of the month

  18. I think that the book should be divided into logical sections. As You have already decided, some pages should be dedicated to the winners of “logo of the month” with their logo and a brief introduction to the designers. Then i guess could be useful having some pages for the masters designers of logo with some of their works as example for the newer designers. I also think that having a part of the book oriented to logo designing techniques, like typography, color choosing, tips and tricks for better results and some pratical example would be great!

  19. Great suggestions so far. My thought would be maybe a spotlight on a design/agency/shop per book or possibly maybe a couple per book. It is always nice to learn a bit more about those that create such creative work.

  20. I think, the winning designer should receive a free “my nest” notebook

  21. @FBL Great idea!

  22. I would like to see new established logo designers like Nido and Mike Erickson (logomotive) discuss their process in getting sketch to final sign of. I would like to hear the thoughts on choice of typography, color. There is hundreds of books out there already on logo design displaying the usual suspects, this book has the opportunity to be so much different, a logo designers book for the logo designer, I want to see doodles, mistakes and failed concepts, I want to see the evolution of idea to final logo, I want to see small companies with limited budgets getting a killer logo and giving them the edge in the market place. Thank you and good luck with this project, Ill be first in the queue to buy!

  23. I think it would be interesting to have a ‘real world bit about how a logo came about and why it’s not quite as good as it should have been. It would take a brave designer to do it, because it might involve slagging off a client – we’ve all had logos that ended up butchered by committee or beaten down and diluted by the approval process. Might be nice to see how good they could have been.

  24. Very interesting and i agree with @FBL’s idea on free book for winning entry :-)

All the best and i wud try and send couple of my entries too.

  25. Got a new idea to be mentioned in the book. What about things, gadgets, devices which are used by the creatives? It can be a kind of a poll in advance, and then you can devote a page or two to the things which are the mostly used and appreciated by the creatives. Guess it will be really interesting to know what are the top notch things for daily use in creative work.

  26. Really like Paul McDaid’s and Gariphic’s suggestion of a case study of a designers brainstorming and development processes. Also a section devoted to typography would be super cool, something that discusses leading and tracking and why some partnerships of lettering work and others don’t.
