Logo usage #7: Electronics

The area of electronics brands is so wide and deep that I could easily name this article Volume 1. But then again, I think that it would all get extremely boring til the moment we do them all throughout the each of the specialized areas such as computers, photo equipment, sound devices, TV and video devices etc. And soon you’ll see what I mean – I deliberately made a chaos of electronic brands from different areas but somehow it seems that the chaos turned out into a very balanced visual experience that might be called ‘enter the world of logotypes’. By logotype I mean the logo that is consisted of letters or words without the originally designed symbol or mark. Now, usually when I talk about this with some of my ‘gadget freak’ friends, their main argument is the size of the area on the device itself that allows the application of the logo (wrong: what’s with the cosmetics packages for example?) or the amount of products being made and distributed worldwide (wrong: take a look at the previous article). Of course, there’s always that legendary question that could be applied to any of our subjects here, and it would sound something like ‘if your DVD player is really good in playing movies, how important is the logo applied on it?’. If that’s the case, why to design them at all? Let’s just pick out the font and write the brand names on those products, that could be fun!

So, who of those should re-brand? Feel free to comment on them, pick out your favorites, ad links of some logos that also deserve to be in this company or do something even more crazy – tell us what would YOU change here to makethem more original and interesting. Enjoy!

  1. I love BenQ, SONY, HP & Fujitsu. Always did. LG is aight as well. But most of the others are begging for something new, fresh and simply more unique.
Btw, great job on these series, Alen. Keep it up!

  2. We have already accustomed to such posts by Allen, truly amazing as well as our favorite brand from this group’s logo B&O

  3. My favorites of this group are the B&O and LG logos. I actually prefer the previous Xerox logo over this one. The perspective looks too forced and fake.

    Interesting post.

Kodak and LG for me :)

  5. Kodak and LG all the way…it’s everywhere in my home. In fact I once worked for LG:)

  6. Srdjan, thanks a lot man! :)
Logo Nest, thank you once again for this opportunity letting me talk all this logo crap here ;)
Leighton, I will have to totally agree with you!
Dominic, thanks once again for stopping by!
Fabster, I remember when you mentioned it. Maybe that was a chance to ask them for a redesign, I love that mark a lot but the text part is totally off now and screams for refreshment!

  7. All of these brands are memorable except for one – EPSON. I know it’s simplicity blah blah.

For example, we could mix the letters in every brand I’d still know that Canon written ‘Anonc’ is cannon, Benq written in “Enbq’ is Benq. However, EPSON is really neither special, nor memorable to me.

My favourite would be B&O, Acer.

    Great article, Alen.

    Cheers,
    Dalius.

  8. I actually really like Philips and B&O

To be honest, I always thought, and still think, logos for cloth lables on the one hand and electronics on the other hand are the most “simple” ones… I dont know if I have ever seen a logo in these categories that make me think “OMG! How cool is that…” Sure, some do have nice logotypes (like Kodak) or nice icons (like LG) .. but in general… a lot of them are really “boring” arent they? And yes… I know how hard it is to design a good logotype ;)

  10. Thanks Dalius, it’s a way of testing the originality and I agree, some would fail here.
Thanks K, I think that Bang and Olufsen lead by far, cool logo but also interesting brand name to work with.
Dominic, say no more. Just spoke offline with some people and suggested, for example, that if Philips only lowered that middle bar on the H to follow the curve of the P position then you could say that something was ‘designed’ there, otherwise, I don’t quite get that one. Not to mention the kerning issues as my friend pointed out as well.

Talking about the Philips Logo and its “design”.

oh… I just realise the logo in your article seems to be the old one… but in the end.. the new one is nt much better …

  12. Heh, so much about that, I didn’t notice the change at all (applied on the products, my cousin is a sucker for Philips). It does look nicer a bit but at the end still very empty to me. Of course, that is only my personal opinion.
