Logo usage #10: Software

This might be a nice opportunity to answer the question I got offline few days ago. One of my friends wanted to comment on a previous post but before doing so he asked me ‘Who are you writing these articles for; designers only or us as well?’. Of course, he is far from being designer but is some kind of a ‘brand maniac’ and ‘gadget freak’ so he wanted to participate in our conversations. And that is exactly my goal here: to simply include everyone who is interested in logo design and has any contact with visual communication on a every day basis, from professional designers and brand builders to the level of simple users of the brands we mention here. We need everyone’s opinion to get a clear picture about the visual/perceptional success of logo design solutions. So for this matter I decided to explore logos that present software companies as a niche that is being maybe more connected and recognized (or used) by the design crowd so we can get an clear view on it from others as well.

And yes, we designers meet most of these logos every day because those products are the tools we love or need to use to make our ideas and concepts see the daylight. As with the brands overall, you can find Top10, Top100 or even Top500 lists of these brands done by different criteria, so let’s join the forces and include the visual one as a measure of successfully communicated software solutions.

So, should any of those re-brand? Feel free to comment on them, pick out your favorites, add links of some logos that also deserve to be in this company or do something even more crazy – tell us what would YOU change here to make them maybe more original and interesting. Enjoy!

  1. I’ve said this before on my own blog and still think Microsoft is due to rebrand. They need to upgrade their image, and what better way to do it but start with a revised logo. I think IBM needs to be updated. The ones I wouldn’t touch at all are Oracle, Adobe, Apple and Red Hat.

  2. Adobe, Apple and Oracle are my favourites!

  3. Mike and Mohamed, thanks guys! I agree on Microsoft needing an re-brand soon, they probably can afford it, right? There are a few more that could use a bit of the facelift IMO, like Synopsys, Compuware or NCR for example.

  4. Man, I so hate this version of COREL logo (although I’m a fan and I use CorelDraw)… They should rebrand immediately!!! As well as SYNOPSYS, SAP, compuware, Ubisoft – these logos are just boring or out-of-date.

My top of these would be as following:
    1. CISCO
    2. Oracle
    3. Adobe

  5. @ Dalius: let me agree with some but I also strongly doubt that SAP people will even touch their identity (it’s an very interesting enclosure form which I couldn’t find anywhere else), maybe they’ll only play with secondary colors and fonts (www.sap.com).
