Sketch process - Why it is important?

Sketching is rough drawing process, which designer use to put ideas fast from his head right on the paper. Putting concepts quickly on the paper is good way to see if they are worth exploring further. This is an essential step in the design process. Sketching will save time, because building concepts on the computer is not fast as on the paper. Sketches are sometimes understandable only to designer who sketch them. Drawing skills is not so important here, it is important that sketches are good enough to show concept, idea and elements that logo will contain.

What Others Say About Sketching

David Arrey - Logo Design Love - Sketching ideas helps me to generate a large number of possible directions. Most of them will eventually be made redundant, but the point is to think laterally and not rule anything out in order to achieve the most effective logo design. I frequently mention sketching in blog posts and portfolio entries, and it's a method also used by other design disciplines - web design, architecture etc.

Jacci Howard Bear - www.about.com - Make lots of rough sketches. Repeat: lots of sketches. You'll rule out many design ideas quickly this way before wasting time in your page layout program. Don't try doing these initial rough designs in your software, even if using dummy text and placeholder graphics. You're apt to get caught up in things like changing the fonts or doing perfectly aligned graphics. Save that step til after you've done the initial brainstorming for ideas with thumbnails.

Helen South - www.about.com - Keeping a sketchbook is a great way of keeping track of creative ideas and getting in the habit of regular drawing, as well as being a useful resource for large works when you are feeling short on ideas.

My Nest - Gorgeous. Inside and out.

MY NEST sketchbook was created primarly for the logo designers and typographers for the most important part of their creative process. Internal grid was made from light dots which allows designers clear scanning of their scketches. Sketchbook was made with double spiral (silver) binding and with perforation on each sketch page.
